Hotels

Asheville Area

We recommend Asheville as the primary location to spend your time while in the area. A great city with a lot to do and easy access to highways going N/S and E/W. There are many more hotels there than in the Waynesville area.

Rental Houses/Cabins

If you are traveling with a family or group of geocachers and are thinking about a hotel, we suggest considering a rental home or cabin.  You will likely be a bit further out, but if splitting the cost with other geocachers, we have found that it can be quite a bit less expensive per person to rent a home.  And you’ll have the benefit of more privacy and not going back to the boring hotel room and losing contact with your friends.  It’s a lot of fun to sit around in the evening (if you’re not out caching all night) and just talk with your friends and go to the fridge for another beverage or snack.  For families, it may be more expensive unless you were planning to use more than one hotel room.

VRBO

We have used VRBO which lists many houses in the area.

airbnb is another option that many are familiar with.

Camping

There are a LOT of campgrounds in the area.

Here is a list of just some of the many, centered on the GeoWoodstock event and stretching towards Asheville.  We only listed those with the highest ratings from Trip Advisor, but there are others so if you don’t find anything here that suits you, search online for some of the others.  Here is a listing of Haywood County campgrounds.  You can also find other places to stay in Haywood County at this link.

At present, we have not obtained any discounts on campgrounds.

Many in the list below are Mom & Pop type campgrounds.  Smaller and sometimes closer to things, but they might also be busier and have more road noise.

We’ve recommended a few in the Asheville area.  2 KOAs that have good reviews online and from local geocachers.  They are also somewhat larger.  Wilson’s is in Asheville right next to a cool park.  It is very convenient to highways.  It isn’t large but is right on the French Broad river.

In North Carolina, the State Parks don’t take reservations for 2017 until January 1, and their website often gets clogged up on January 1.  If you want to reserve now, see our recommendations below.  Also, State Parks have very few if any geocaches in them due to a fairly restrictive policy implemented years ago.
